Does Chiropractic Really Help with Back and Neck Pain as We Age?
If you’re in your late 50s, 60s, 70s, or beyond and living with nagging back or neck pain, you’ve probably wondered whether anything actually helps — or whether you’re just supposed to “live with it.” It’s one of the most common questions we hear at our Kelowna clinic, and it’s a fair one.
The encouraging news? A freshly published systematic review in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (2026) took a hard look at this exact question, and the findings are worth talking about.
What the Researchers Did
Rather than relying on opinion or a single study, the research team gathered the strongest available evidence — randomized controlled trials, the gold standard in medical research — specifically focused on adults aged 55 and older with chronic spinal conditions (pain lasting 12 weeks or more). They examined seven trials involving more than 1,200 patients, looking at how spinal manipulative therapy (the adjustments chiropractors are known for) stacked up against other treatments for low back pain, neck pain, and lumbar spinal stenosis.
This matters because older adults are often left out of pain research altogether. The review even noted that only about one in ten studies on low back pain includes older patients. So having evidence focused on this age group is genuinely useful.
What They Found
Here’s the honest, balanced takeaway — and we want to be honest, because your health deserves real information, not hype.
The review concluded that spinal manipulation may offer comparable or modestly greater benefit than other treatments for older adults with chronic spinal conditions. The effects were most notable for neck pain relief and for physical function in those with lumbar spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal that’s common with age).
A few points stood out:
- For neck pain, adjustments combined with home exercise showed greater pain reduction than exercise alone.
- For spinal stenosis, manual therapy paired with individualized exercise improved function more than medication or group exercise.
- Across every condition studied, no other treatment outperformed spinal manipulation — and adjustments showed no unfavourable outcomes across the trials.
The researchers were also candid about the limits: the overall certainty of the evidence ranged from very low to moderate, mainly because there simply aren’t enough large studies on older adults yet. In plain terms, the signal points in a positive direction, but more research is needed to nail down exactly how much benefit to expect.
Why This Is Reassuring for Seniors
One of the most practical findings has nothing to do with the spine directly. Many older adults are already managing multiple medications, and adding more painkillers isn’t always ideal. Non-drug, non-surgical options like chiropractic care are valued precisely because they sidestep that concern — something both patients and clinicians appreciate as we age.
And on safety: while this particular review didn’t focus on adverse events, the broader research it draws on points to serious complications being rare. As with any care, that’s exactly why a proper assessment comes first — to make sure treatment is appropriate and tailored to you.
What This Means for You in Kelowna
If you’ve been putting off doing something about chronic back or neck pain, this research is a gentle nudge that you have real, evidence-supported options. Spinal manipulation appears to be at least as effective as other conservative treatments — and for some conditions, possibly a bit better.
At Tutt Street Family Chiropractic, we take an individualized approach, especially with our older patients. That means a thorough assessment, careful attention to your bone health and any medications you’re taking, and a plan that often combines gentle adjustments with the kind of home exercise the research highlights as effective. No two spines are the same, and your care shouldn’t be either.
